Library Membership

All you need to do is fill out an application form and provide proof of identity showing your current name and address such as your driver’s licence, pension card, DSS card, students card or rates notice.  If you are under 16 you will need an adult family member or guardian to sign for your membership application and have appropriate identification.  You will be issued with a Library Card which you need to bring to the library in order to borrow.  Please notify the library immediately if your card is lost or damaged - a replacement charge of $ 5.70 incl. GST applies.  Also please notify the library if you change your name, address or phone number.  Your Gloucester Library Card can also be used at any service point of Newcastle Regional Library.  You may borrow up to twenty items per visit with a maximum of 40 items permitted on loan at one time.

Library Catalogue    

The on-line catalogue allows for easy searches into the Newcastle Region's library inventory of fiction and non-fiction materials.  You can use your existing Library Borrowers Card to make and check reservations, as well as checking your current list of borrowings.  Click here to access the Newcastle Regional Library catalogue.    

Loan Period, Reservations and Overdue Policy

Books and magazines may be borrowed for periods of 4 weeks and 2 weeks respectively, however for popular items this period is reduced to two weeks, with no renewal period.  DVD’s may be borrowed for up to 2 week.  You will be given a receipt that lists what you have borrowed and when it is due to be returned.  If an item is not reserved by another customer you can renew it either in person or over the phone.  One renewal per item is permitted.

If there is an item you would like to borrow and which it is not available at the time of your visit, it may be reserved. If the item has to be obtained from within another library system, a higher fee may be levied and will be advised to you at the time of reservation. You will be advised by phone, letter or email when the item becomes available.    

Like most library services fees are charged for items returned after the due date.  If you are late in returning items, you need to know: 

  • The overdue fee is 45cents per item, per day from the due date including public holidays and Sundays;
  • We will send you a Reminder Notice 14 days after the due date, outlining the items that are outstanding and the overdue fees payable at the time of the notice;
  • Once accumulated & unpaid overdue fees total $50.00, your borrowing privileges will be suspended until fees are reduced below $50.00;
  • No overdue fees are charged for material borrowed by children on their own cards, however, if childrens' items are borrowed on an adults card, and are returned late, an overdue fee will be charged; and
  • If an items is lost, stolen or damaged beyond repair we will ask for the price of the item plus $15.00 non-refundable handling processing fee.

Please contact the Library immediately if you receive an Overdue Notice for items you have returned. Items will be considered lost if we have not heard from you within 50 days of an Overdue Notice.  It is important that you understand these rules as they are here to protect you, the customer, as well as other Library members.  We are all working together to provide an accessible, efficient and fair library service.     

Internet and email access

Computer workstations with internet access are located at the Library and are available free-of-charge.  Email accounts can be set-up with public providers [gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo etc.] and can be accessed via Library computers, there are costs for printing of document.
