The township of Gloucester is the major commercial and urban centre of the Shire. The main shopping centre, commercial and light industrial areas are located in Gloucester Township, together with Council's Administration Centre, Gloucester Hospital and the main schools.
A number of important river systems dissect the region from west to east, rising in the Barrington Tops, a world heritage listed wilderness area and flowing eastward to the sea via the Manning River.
The three principal rivers within Gloucester Shire are:
Gloucester Council, although generally included with the Hunter Region for administrative functions, is also part of the Mid North Coast Region for many Federal Government services such as Centrelink, Valuer General (VG) (State) and many Federal funding Programs.
Within Gloucester Shire there are five small Villages:
The village of Barrington to the north-west of Gloucester is growing in population and housing numbers while the other villages are static or declining. The towns of Wards River and Stroud, although part of the Great Lakes Council, often associate with the Gloucester area for shopping, schools and medical facilities; due to their close geographic proximity.
The Gloucester Visitor Information Centre handles the daily walk-in, phone and email enquiries and provides a current, comprehensive website promoting events and providing accommodation information. Typical information requested covers fishing, bushwalking, hiking, canoeing, scenic drives, National Parks & Wildlife, farm trails and other activities.
Tourism accommodation ranges from farmstay, bed & breakfast, motels, hotels and country retreats through to luxury resort style accommodation.
